Our Lady in Green

Our Lady of Guadalupe or the Virgin of Guadalupe is a Roman Catholic icon and Mexico's most popular image: Nobel laureate Octavio Paz is quoted as saying that "the Mexican people, after more than two centuries of experiments, have faith only in the Virgin of Guadalupe and the National Lottery" (Paz 1976). Most often described as a manifestation of the Virgin Mary, her feast day, December 12, on the Roman Catholic calendar of saints commemorates her appearance to St. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City from December 9 through December 12, 1531.
